Hayward cosmetic dentist Dr. Gary Fong is pleased to offer advanced tooth whitening options to our Castro Valley patients. Our in-office tooth whitening treatments can lighten teeth several shades during a single visit and, with proper maintenance, can produce a sparkling white smile for months at a time. Better still, KöR teeth whitening is applied by our experienced cosmetic dentist, helping reduce the risks of sensitivity and oral tissue irritation that is common with over-the-counter options.

If you are interested in learning more about your tooth whitening options in the Castro Valley area, please call Dr. Gary Fong at 510-582-8727 and schedule a consultation today.

Deep Stains

Deep stains, such as those caused by tetracycline, cannot be removed with most topical tooth whitening solutions. KöR has shown to be effective at removing these stains as well as ribboning from fluoridation, but may not fully whiten stains located deep underneath the enamel. When these types of stains are present, Dr. Fong often recommends porcelain veneers or dental bonding for consistent and ideal whitening. During your initial consultation Dr. Fong will assess your particular needs and recommend those treatments best suited to produce optimal results.

If you suffer from chronic headaches, lasting treatment may require little more than realigning the jaw. TMJ, a condition in which the jaw becomes misaligned, has been identified as one of the most common causes of chronic, debilitating headaches. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most commonly overlooked.

If you are looking for headache treatment that produces lasting relief, please call San Leonardo neuromuscular dentist Dr. Gary Fong at 510-582-8727 to schedule a TMJ evaluation today.

Headache Treatments

Many parents have used the Tooth Fairy, as a way to reward/excite children. What parents might not realize, is that the Tooth Fairy can be used as a tool to get children excited about their oral health starting at an early age. Interest in the Tooth Fairy sparks a light within your child and opens the door for parents to use this opportunity as a teaching tool. In honor of National Tooth Fairy Day, here are a few suggestions for ways to use the Tooth Fairy to teach your kids about good dental habits.

Introduce the tooth Fairy early on:

Before your child tarts losing teeth, teach them about the importance of brushing/flossing. Let them know that healthy teeth make the Tooth Fairy very happy. If your child is giving you trouble, remind them that the Tooth Fairy is watching over and only like healthy teeth free of “bugs” or cavities. Does this tactic sound familiar? Think Santa Claus and his naughty or nice list. Kids are enchanted by the idea of all things magical. The Tooth Fairy can be used to get them excited and interested in taking care of their teeth from an early age.

Leave a note re-enforcing good habits/give oral health gifts:

When you were a kid did you ever receive a letter from Santa or the Tooth Fairy? If so, then you know just how exciting of an experience this can be. The thought of someone so special taking the time to write to you can make any child smile. So take this advice and write your child a letter. Highlight anything you think they should know about dental health and review the importance of brushing and flossing. Give them words of encouragement and let them know that their hard work is not going unnoticed. In most scenarios, the Tooth Fairy will leave cash in exchange for your child’s tooth however there are other options for parents who want a change. For example, consider gifting a toy. Or what about a new toothbrush or flavorful toothpaste?

Whatever you decide, your child will love and cherish these special memories.

For more ideas on helping your children maintain optimal oral health, please contact Hayward family dentist Dr. Gary Fong online or by calling 510-582-8727 today.

Dental implants are the only form of tooth replacement that has the potential of offering life-long results. Once inserted, dental implants undergo a process called osseointegration during which they become accepted by your body as a new tooth root. Not only does this serve to anchor your implant into bone, it helps prevent changes to jaw structure that cannot be addressed by other forms of tooth replacement. For this reason, Hayward dentist Dr. Gary Fong often recommends dental implants above other, less permanent options.

Maintaining Dental Implants

Dental implants can be maintained in the same way as your natural teeth. The quality restorations Dr. Fong uses to complete dental implants are durable and stain-resistant, but should still be brushed after every meal and flossed at least once daily. These simple steps can help ensure your implant and its restoration remain strong and attractive for years to come.

Depending on the type of restoration used, Dr. Fong may recommend avoiding toothpastes with abrasive ingredients. This is something that can be discussed in greater detail during your dental implants restoration consultation.

To schedule your consultation, please contact Gary G. Fong, DDS today. Dr. Fong provides implant restorations for patients living in and around the Hayward area of California.

So what are sealants? You may have gotten them in the past, but do you know how beneficial they are? Think of sealants as little coatings that protect your teeth from cavity-causing bacteria. This procedure is completely painless and is completed during one visit to your dentist!

Did you know that many Dental insurance plans even cover the cost of sealants? Well now you do! Call your dental insurance provider to find out more information.

Sealants are usually included in the preventive care category for children. Cavities can be uncomfortable and painful, so why not take every step to avoiding this situation? Help your children by promoting a healthy smile now. 1. Did you know that the average person produces a quart of saliva daily? That’s 10,000 gallons of spit over a lifetime. Saliva is essential to good dental health because it washes food off the teeth, neutralizes acids in the mouth, fights germs and prevents bad breath.
  2. Did you know that 50% of people say that a smile is the first thing that they notice about someone?
  3. Today, our society finds a white smile to be attractive. But did you know that in medieval Japan, white teeth were considered to be ugly? Women used roots and inks to stain their teeth black, which they felt was much more attractive.
  4. Did you know that just like our fingerprints, everyone’s tongue print is different? Our tongue is the only muscle in our body that isn’t attached to something at both ends.
  5. Dentists have been around for a long time. Archaeologists have evidence of the first dental fillings in teeth from people who lived between 7,500 and 9,000 years ago.
  6. In China, in 1948, the bristle toothbrush was invented. The bristles were made of the stiff hairs from the back of a pig’s neck. Pig’s hair was used in toothbrushes until 1938 when nylon bristles were introduced.
  7. Most Americans did not brush their teeth everyday twice a day until after World War 2. In World War Two, the military required that soldiers brush their teeth twice a day to keep their teeth healthy. The soldiers brought that habit back home after the war.
  8. The world’s oldest recipe for toothpaste is from Egypt in 400 AD. The formula included mint, salt, grains of pepper and dried iris flower.

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile, it may be time to consider porcelain veneers. Small enough to fit seamlessly over your natural teeth, but strong enough to produce remarkable results for years to come, porcelain veneers are among the most effective treatments for:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Irregularly shaped or unevenly sized teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps or spaces in between teeth
  • Severe tooth discoloration or staining

If you are experiencing any of these issues, call Hayward cosmetic dentist Dr. Gary Fong at 510-582-8727 to schedule your porcelain veneer consultation today.

The Porcelain Veneers Process

Veneers are placed over two office visits. During your first visit, Dr. Fong will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of tooth enamel, making an impression of your smile, and fitting you with temporary veneers. The impression will be used by our dental lab partners to create your customized veneers. Once those are ready, you will return to our office to have them placed. The entire process typically takes 10 to 14 days.

If you are interested in learning how porcelain veneers can improve the appearance of your smile, please contact Gary G. Fong, DDS to schedule your initial consultation. Our cosmetic dentist serves the Castro Valley and San Leonardo areas of California from our conveniently located Hayward office.

Ah, the elusive Hollywood smile. The look that most would give their own arm for. All jokes aside, everyone wants to look their best. Hollywood has done a marvelous job of idolizing qualities that may seem all too unobtainable for the average person. After all, what has become the “norm” for our standards of beauty has been implemented throughout the entire entertainment industry for many years.  So what about the regular, down to earth  people that do not make millions upon millions of dollars each year? How do they reach the standards that have been set by Hollywood? Fear not reader, for I have a solution for you. Imagine for a minute, meeting the guy/girl of your dreams or going in for that “dream job” interview all with the confidence of a beautiful smile. When you are happy with the way your teeth look, confidence radiates from every fiber of your being. You feel sexier, smile brighter, and all around are happier with yourself. Now doesn’t that sound nice? You may be listening to your conscious right now, and the little voice may be telling you not to get your hopes up, But please, hear me out. Tell yourself that you deserve this, because deep down you know that you do.

Dr. Fong is an expert in cosmetic and general dentistry and has implemented high standards that are hard to find anywhere else. He uses the Snap-On Smile to provide patients with a quick, painless, beautiful Hollywood smile. Even better news, if you have sensitive teeth, the Snap-On Smile will still work for you.  For your convenience, I have added some Frequently asked questions/answers to give you a better idea of why the snap on smile may be just the right thing for you.

How long does the procedure take and how long will the  Snap-On smile last?

The Snap-On Smile can last from two to three years. The procedure itself is not overly- time consuming. During your first brief appointment, the dentist will determine if you are a candidate and, if you are they will make an impression of your existing teeth. In a few weeks, your new Snap-On Smile will be ready, and you go for your second brief dentist appointment. You simply pop it in after a few minor adjustments that the dentist will make and you can wear it home.

Does the Snap-On Smile procedure hurt?

The Snap-On Smile procedure is completely painless. It requires no shots, drilling, and no removal of your natural teeth.

Will the Snap-On Smile affect my speech?

There will be a temporary adjustment period as you get used to having something new in your mouth. This is very common, and most people report that their speech is back to normal within 2 weeks. Wearing the Snap-On Smile all day will allow you to return to your normal speech much quicker.

Will Snap-On Smile stain?

Snap-On Smile does not stain easily, but just like your natural teeth, certain products such as coffee, wine or soda can cause staining. Your Snap-On Smile comes with a cleaning kit to help you maintain its wonderful appearance.
